Heres a good simple fork to make in the woods, and a good thing for kids to make to help with their knife skills.

Get your self a green stick around this size, remove about 3 inches of bark, we do this as bark harbours bacteria n stuff  and we dont want that in our munch do we  and flatten the end, like so......

Image

Then hold the knife blade two fingers into the palm and
using our fore and middle finger as a guide you slide up the stick onto the blade, this allows you to push up with the stick it will go as far as your palm and no more preventing the pushing hand sliding up and hitting the sharp edge, we dont want that now do we

Image

do this in a cross fashion on the top of the stick so it looks like this..

Image

then cut up to the tip on each split so you have a 4 pointed sharp end, this will give you the forked end, like this...

Image

then cut 2 slithers of wood from the other end of the stick and slide them into the split to splay out the prongs, and it looks like this, a most exelent toasting roasting fork

leave your bent wire at home and carry your fork in your brain ;)

Very nicely done! What kind of green wood do you recommend? I have learned from using green wooden skewers, which I debark entirely, that some woods can add some interesting flavors to your meal and not all of them are good ones.
